Mainpoint has installed another Plumis Automist fire prevention system at St. Nicholas Square in Bristol.

St Nicholas Market is a market in Bristol, England. It is located on Corn Street, in The Exchange at Bristol City Centre. It is also home to Bristol Farmers’ Market, the Nails Market, and the Slow Food Market, all of which are located on Corn Street in front of the Exchange.

The building- having been built in 1743 St Nicholas Market is the oldest and best loved market in Bristol.

This market place can be found in the heart of the old city, which is full of fantastic examples of Georgian Architecture and is only a short walk from all of the hotels in central Bristol.

Its historical architecture, fantastic stalls bursting with a wide variety of goods and food items, its quirky ambience combine to make the perfect place to shop, eat and enjoy.  St Nicholas Market is also home to several street markets which take place in the pedestrian streets which run adjacent to The Exchange Building.

As the building is listed not only was it’s protection from a potential fire very important, but also how the system was installed without damaging any of it’s historic architecture.

As Mainpoint have built up several years expertise in supplying and installing the Plumis Automist we were the obvious choice of contractor for this difficult and prestigious project.

Mainpoint installs Plumis Automist at National Star College

Mainpoint has just installed a Plumis Automist system at the National Star College in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire Mainpoint has just installed a Plumis Automist system at the National Star College in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire to enable it’s residents’ independent living.

When a brand new accommodation unit was built in the centre of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire for people with disabilities and acquired brain injuries it was crucial to provide adequate fire protection to allow increased time to evacuate the building in the event of a fire.

During a lifetime, each of us runs a 1 in 5 risk of being involved in a serious house fire but the young, the disabled and the elderly are most vulnerable so the risks were high.

National Star College provides specialist further education, training, personal development and residential services. The design of the building was such that the bedrooms in the 4 independent living units were at the back of an open plan living area with no protected escape route. Due to the restricted mobility of some of the occupants, they would be unable to escape through windows in the event of a fire, and would have to pass through the open plan kitchens, dining areas and living rooms.

John Everitt, a partner in Coombes Everitt, the architects who designed the building had used an innovative fire suppression solution in the past which uses a high pressure pump to generate a fine water mist from nozzles mounted under a standard tap, on a work top or on a wall to provide residential fire life protection. “I had no hesitation in recommending that Automist from Plumis was used because it is easy to install and aesthetically pleasing, seamlessly integrating into the design as well as being very cost effective as it costs a fraction of traditional sprinklers.”

The innovative device is designed to limit fire growth and minimise the residents’ exposure to toxic gases and heat in the event of a fire. It makes evacuation easier in an emergency – particularly important for vulnerable people as it provides precious extra time for the unconscious and immobile, as well as sounding an alarm. Sensing is based on heat detection as recommended in Approved Document B making it a very reliable solution.

Coombe Everitt plan on continuing to use Automist, including in listed buildings which are being converted into flats.

Open Plan Fire Safety Protection by Mainpoint

There’s no denying that homeowners appreciate the freedom, light, and sense of space that go with open plan layouts. Yet many open plan projects stumble or are halted because the layout would create dangerous inner rooms whose only escape route passes through the open area. So how can you provide open layouts with a safe fire escape route from these inner rooms?

Plumis Automist is a discreet fire suppression appliance designed for use in homes. The system activates when fire temperatures are detected, using a fine water mist to restore survivable conditions while occupants escape. The product includes nozzles that mount on a standard wall plate which can be matched to light switches and sockets in the home, and a small pump that can be located in a nearby cupboard. The result is almost invisible.

A minimal Automist system can serve up to 32m2 of floor area, and the system is easily extensible up to 96m2. For kitchen/diners, alternative nozzle mounts are available for use in conjunction with worktops and taps, allowing an excellent match to the design.

For three-storey houses with an open plan ground floor (four-storey if one is a basement), Automist eliminates the need for a boxed-in staircase as long as the kitchen is separate and a suitable fire door can be installed at first floor level. Such a layout can add considerable value to a loft converted house and does not need special attention or effort at the building control stage thanks to Automist’s LABC Registered Detail. More expansive open layouts may also be possible where a fire engineer or specialist Approved Inspector is involved. In apartments, Automist can often allow bedrooms that sit off a central living area, and, when refitting taller houses, it can sometimes even avoid the need to add a whole new staircase.

Automist Plumis now an LABC Solution by MainPoint

Automist Plumis now an LABC Solution by MainPoint

LABC approved fire protection system with MainPoint

There is increasing demand for open plan living space and the Plumis Automist pre-engineered watermist solution from Plumis provides designers with an active fire protection option to protect escape routes and aid evacuation, offering design flexibility and reducing costs whilst meeting building regulations.

Building Control approval is essential and Automist, has now been assessed and accepted as an LABC Registered Solution – Registered Detail RD171 to provide active protection for escape routes and facilitate open plan layouts in suitable loft conversion applications. LABC Registration allows a company to register a product so individual local authorities can automatically approve it. The scheme enables much faster approval of most open plan layouts, allowing building control officers to approve loft conversion projects without a long and detailed investigation. It assures approvers that the system has been rigorously checked and independently peer reviewed. The scheme is designed to streamline the adoption of innovative solutions like Automist in appropriate applications.

Alan Hart, Plumis Commercial Director explains:
“Now that Automist is registered, it assures the whole construction industry that it has been rigorously checked by LABC members, enabling developers, architects, designers, technical specifiers and contractors to register or use existing design details to minimise the Building Control checking and approvals process in loft conversions with open plan ground floor.”

To make the process straightforward, approvers can download the relevant technical information and requirements that need to be verified on each particular layout by contacting Mike Fowler direct on 01242 584490 or you can see more information on our website at: Automist fire sprinklers.

Skara Brae, Bath

Automist fire safety installation by MainPoint

Modern, luxury, 3 storey house in Bath had 3 Automist® systems installed due to Building Control and Fire Brigade advising of a requirement for extra fire protection.

The house nestles in a steep hill where the middle floor had fire exit access from a bridge to the hill, however, the concern for the inhabitants welfare should a fire break out was due to the difficult access for the fire brigade on a call out.

The distance between the house and where the fire brigade would be means it would take more time for anyone to escape. With Automist® in place, it now gives the homeowners more time to escape a house fire.
