When new company, Greenwich Communities Ltd of Newport who provide affordable dwellings for housing associations, embarked upon their first privately owned project – the building of a 3 storey, split level dwelling with an open plan layout – they were faced with the problem of providing a cost effective and appropriate fire protection solution, which would be acceptable to their clients.
They were advised by Oculus Building Consultancy of Bath that the open plan design would require a protected escape route or the use of alternative compensatory measures such as sprinklers. The client was unhappy with either of these solutions and was equally reluctant to have sprinklers installed due to the prospect of the newly built home and the brand new fixtures and fittings being drenched in the event of a discharge.
Eliot Hopkins, researched a resolution on the internet and found that Mainpoint Fire Protection of Cheltenham could advise. Established in 1991, Mainpoint are specialists in the supply, installation and maintenance of fire protection equipment to businesses, residents and the public sector. Alan Gatenby, Mainpoint’s Operations Manager recommended Plumis Automist, an alternative innovative fire suppression solution which would overcome these potential problems and facilitate the open plan design.
Automist uses a high pressure pump to generate a fine water suppression mist from nozzles, which can be mounted under a standard monobloc mixing tap, stand alone on a work top or a wall. The benefits include rapid and automatic fire suppression, neat and economical installation and the need for significantly less pipe work and disruption than a traditional sprinkler system.
Significantly, it would also avoid water damage to the fabric of the property, fixtures and fittings in the event of a discharge.
The proposal to use the Automist solution was submitted to the building control inspectors, Oculus Building Consultancy of Bath, and it was approved as an alternative compensatory measure. Eliot Hopkins was delighted that the open plan design could be achieved using such a cost effective, unobtrusive solution. “Automist was an ideal solution for the contemporary open plan design of the project at the same time as complying fully with building regulations. We will certainly use Automist in projects with similar requirements in the future as it gives so much design flexibility.”
